Alton Towers is one of the most popular theme parks in the UK attracting over 2.8 million visitors annually. The Park is two square kilometres (500 acres) in size, and has eight roller coasters and five water rides. As well as the rides, Alton Towers also has impressive formal gardens which were commissioned by the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury in 1814. The ruined towers from which the park derives its name are open to the public and include the original banqueting hall, chapel and conservatories. Alton Towers is just 10 miles drive from the pub.
Blackbrook Zoo is home to the largest bird collection in the UK and is internationally renowned for its captive breeding achievements of endangered species. The Zoo was founded in 1991 by Diana Holloway and is still operated today by her son Mark. As well as the excellent Penguin and Lemur enclosures be sure to check out the cheeky meerkats, wallabies and many other exciting creatures. A great family day out and only five miles from the pub. Blackbrook Zoo is open from 10am daily.
Chatsworth House, home of the Duke and Dutchess of Devonshire is located just 15 miles from Thorncliffe. The House, filled with priceless artwork, antiques and artefacts is open to public tours. In addition to the magnificent house the estate also has a 105 acre landscaped garden and farmyard (especially popular with children). The farmyard gives an educational and entertaining insight into the British farming industry with a variety of farming demonstrations throughout the day. The Churnet Valley Railway is a 5¼ mile track running from Cheddleton Station to Kingsley and Froghall Station. The track follows the valley created by the river Churnet, and provides varied scenery. The Railway is famous for running several restored steam trains and for its various historical re-enactments including very realistic second world war ‘living history weekends’, as well as 60s revival and Victorian trains events.
